The Best Ways To Remove Wax From A Scented Candle Holder

Looking for the best ways to get wax out of your scented candle holder? We've got all the answers for you and, once you've removed the wax, you can refill your favourite candle with our scented candle refills.

You should stop burning a scented candle when there is 1/2 inch of wax left at the bottom of the container. If you burn a candle right to the end of the wax, the candle holder overheats and can damage the surface underneath the candle or the holder itself as well as creating a potential fire hazard.

Our Number One way to remove wax uses boiling water.

Step 1: Add Boiling Water

Pour boiling water into the container covering the residue wax and leave to cool down. The boiling water will melt the candle wax and the wax will float to the surface.

Step 2: Remove Wax

Let the water cool completely before removing the wax and placing it in the bin and then you can use hot water, soap and a sponge to clean out the holder. Don't let any paraffin wax go down the sink as it will clog - if you place a piece of kitchen towel over the sink stopper you can use this to catch all the wax you remove.

At Number Two it's freezing.

Step 1: Freeze

Freezing you candle will freeze the wax which causes it to shrink. Place your candle holder in the freezer and leave it for a few hours. The candle wax should then pop out of the container using a teaspoon to release the wax from the base if necessary.

Step 2: Remove Wax

Use hot water, soap and a sponge to clean out the holder. Don't let any paraffin wax go down the sink as it will clog - if you place a piece of kitchen towel over the sink stopper you can use this to catch all the wax you remove.

If you have a stubborn wax residue in your conatiner, we'd suggest repeating the first method using boiling water to melt the wax and repeat until it's removed. We don't suggest heating the wax with a hairdryer as this can splatter hot wax across you and your clothes which is impossible to clean.

We also don't suggest keeping the old wax and making a new candle. The wax will usually be paraffin based (which is toxic) and you won't have the right wick for the combination of wax and oil you create from mixing wax together.

Once your candle holder is clean, you can then refill with a brand new scented candle refill from Constant Candle and enjoy your favourite candle holder time after time.

These are all tips for candles made with paraffin wax (Diptyque, Jo Malone, M&S, The White Company and all high street candles will use paraffin wax which gets really waxy and sticky when you try to remove it). Our Constant Candle refills use water soluble rapeseed wax which is a joy to remove. It will simply scrape out of the container with a teaspoon and you can remove the wick and use the leftover wax as a wax melt. The jar can then be cleaned with hot water and soap.
